THE YORK ART SOCIETY was founded in 1921
by The Dean of York, later the Dean of Westminster,
The Very Rev. William Foxley Norris D.D.
The Society's aim is to encourage the practice and understanding of the visual arts in York and its neighbourhood. It now has around 200 members.
Society members usually meet monthly, either for lectures, demonstrations or teaching or self-help workshops; occasionally painting holidays are arranged and visits to places of artistic interest.
The Society hold exhibitions of members` paintings, usually twice a year and also exhibit the Society members paintings, in the 'Gallery' pages of this site.
The York Art Society aims to promote visual art in its creative form in greater York and surrounding area. In order to achieve this the society may place simple 'links' to other local art groups who also have a website. Even where the groups do not have a website the society will consider placing important notices of the group's events, ie: exhibitions etc. on this website, usually at no charge. (See Local Art page)
A quarterly newsletter of news, views and event dates is produced, keeping the members informed of current events and topics of interest.

Current membership is £37.oo pa.. Members exhibition entries are free, as are the regular demonstrations. Workshops do have a nominal charge, based upon the tutors expenses etc.
